Setup: Both Jpeg shots, cameras were set to NO Noise Reduction! None! ISO is 1600. Smaller D80 image was sized to match D300.
WARNING! These images look messy/grainy, but remember they are Jpegs with NR turned OFF.
Summary: Clearly the D300 is superior at both noise and image detail. I thought it would be closer, but take a look.
Other notes: The 3200 comparison is even more dramatic. When I compared the images with NR, I found the NR to work differently in each camera. It surprised me to find the D80 more agressive at NR. It emphasized SMOOTH colors, while the D300 kept some noise to maintain better detail.
