夏东海曾长期跟随前妻到美国陪读工作，离婚后带着7岁的儿子夏雨归国发展，并与在国内长大的女儿夏雪相聚，后与某大医院的护士长刘梅结婚，本剧的主要故事就发生在这个重新组合的家庭中：夏东海和刘梅分别离异过，并各自带有小孩。两人有一个共同特点：关心孩子的成长和教育。共同心愿使他们生活在一起，期望“整合”两人的爱心和智慧，培养出出类拔萃的后代。但是，由于两人在性格、爱好、教育背景和认识上的差异，造成了教育方法的不同，有时甚至互相矛盾。这给他们带来了诸多烦恼！而且最为重要的是，在他们的眼里，现代的孩子思想越来越怪，越来越难以捉摸。关心越多，反抗却越大！由此引出一个个令人捧腹而又发人深思的故事来。
另一个角度，生活在同一屋檐下的姐弟仨，尽管父母各异，年龄层次不同，倒也相处得煞是融洽，犹如亲生一般。不过由于三人生长环境的迥异，外在环境的影响，使他们有着迥然的个性和偏爱，所以争执在所难免。三人时而团结一致，联手对付难缠的父母，时而又进行内部斗争，争取自己的权益。
全剧表现的题材范围包括了孩子成长过程中的所有问题，如学习、交友、早恋、诚信、爱心、兴趣、习惯等引起社会、家庭关注的问题，以及与父母的观念冲突等等。
