Alleged Canon 5D Mark II features are being leaked surfaced via a user posting on digital photography blog dpreview.com: It claims a September 8th release and the following features:
- MSRP: $2,399.95 (SSP: $2,199.95), body only - significantly less than the rival Nikon D700.
- 16MP FF sensor
- 6 FPS
- Full weather sealing
- VGA-resolution display (from same supplier Sony uses for their new Handycams, except in 4:3 aspect ratio here)
- Pop-up flash
- Anti-dust features
- NO Live View
- NO pro AF from 1D (although all points are cross-type)
- NO video mode whatsoever (silliest rumor I’ve ever heard)
- NO compatibility with EF-S lenses (physically impossible anyway)
- NO electronic crop mode for faster shot rate
- NO HDMI-out
- NO UDMA CF support
Bottom Line: If you just have to have full-frame glory and gorgeous, incredibly detailed images, especially for portrait and landscape work, you can’t really beat the allegedly upcoming Canon 5D Mark II. If it materializes, it will be an iconic camera for its price range, which may be significantly less than the $2,999 full frame Nikon D700. Generally considered to be superior for sports and action photography, the Nikon D700 might be overkill for most of us.
If money is an issue, we highly recommend the Canon XSi - a very well-made Canon that costs a third of the Mark II. Even cheaper is the Canon XS, which trims all the luxury features down to a very reasonable digital SLR. You can purchase one for around $599.
